After watching documentaries about plastic, I was shocked at how plastic effects wildlife & humans. I decided to dramatically change my lifestyle. I started growing my own food to reduce plastic packaging & started this zero-waste, organic, plastic-free business in 2012. My first product was USA-grown organic cotton bags, since I could not find any organic bag that was without synthetic/plastic, (even GOTS certified bags are sewn with polyester threads). So, I had to learn sewing and start a business. Silicone products are a very versatile, durable and reusable alternative to plastic, so after finding out that my silicone lids & silicone Stasher zip lock bags are made from silicone that does not pass pinch test (white shows through), source: The New York Times. I got upset, so I decided to investigate, I questioned many silicone manufacturers what are they adding into the silicone. Some manufacturers did not want to share their manufacturing practices, yet some admitted to adding fillers into their FDA standard silicone (which is allowed by FDA!) Based on this info I did not feel comfortable using inferior silicone products, especially in microwave and/or freezer.
